Hi, I’m Shweta. On Sunday, 30th November, Kengo-san & I took part in an event called Ecology Walking, an activity focused on keeping the town clean while enjoying a mindful morning stroll. The concept is simple yet meaningful, you walk around the neighborhood, pick up trash, and contribute to the environment. What makes this activity unique is that participants wear traditional Japanese wooden sandals called GETA while collecting waste. The combination of culture, community, and cleanliness gives the event a special charm.

The event is organized every month by Tatsuya Hirono, the owner of “BM Integration”, a local kickboxing studio. His goal is to create a space where people of all ages can come together, experience the town in a different way, and build a habit of environmental awareness. As we moved through the streets of Fushimi, we gathered trash and sorted it into categories like burnable waste and plastics. This simple act of separating waste reminded me how small actions can collectively make a big impact.

My personal experience during the Ecology Walking was memorable. Wearing geta for the first time added a cultural touch to the morning, and it was interesting to walk in them while doing something productive. I also enjoyed interacting with the other participants, exchanging small conversations as we walked side by side. Along the way, I even discovered places I had never noticed before, including a traditional public bathhouse that added to the charm of exploring Fushimi at a slower pace. This traditional public bathhouse has been operating for years and is a piece of history for Fushimi town.

The weather made the experience even better; the warm sunlight combined with the cool winter breeze created the perfect balance for a refreshing morning walk. Moving around early in the day helped keep the body warm and active during the cold season. More importantly, walking through the quiet streets in the morning allowed me to see a different, calmer version of Fushimi. The Ecology Walking event was not just about cleaning the town; it was a wholesome and uplifting way to start the day, blending community, culture, and care for the environment.

The entire event felt like a meaningful process of learning, connecting, and contributing to the community. Ecology Walking was not just about collecting trash, it created an opportunity to communicate with others, meet new people, and understand the importance of keeping the environment clean. Through this activity, I realized that even small actions, like picking up litter in your surroundings, can lead to a much bigger positive impact. Walking through the quiet streets of Fushimi allowed me to appreciate how individual efforts can support a cleaner and more mindful community. Overall, it was a wholesome and uplifting way to start the day, combining culture, awareness, and shared purpose.
